ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Communication Courses
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) offers three (3) Amateur Radio Emergency Communication (AREC) Courses through its Certification and Continuing Education Program. The three (s) courses include AREC Level I (Introduction), AREC Level II (Intermediate) and AREC Level III (Advanced) are all offered on-line as an independent study program and run for eight (8) weeks each.

FEMA Emergency Management Institute Independent Study Program
The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI) offers on-line and self-paced courses designed for people who have emergency management responsibilities as well as the general public. All the courses are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify for enrollment. The courses address Incident Management, Operational Planning, Disaster Logistics, Emergency Communications, Service to Disaster Victims, Continuity Programs, Public Disaster Communications, Integrated Preparedness and Hazard Mitigation.

SKYWARN Severe Storm and Tornado Spotter Training
The National Weather Service (NWS) will offer SKYWARN severe storm and tornado spotter training classes throughout north central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, from February through April. The classes will be free and open to the public. Most will be held on weekday evenings, but some daytime and Saturday classes will be available. The classes take about 2 hours.

CSX Safety Awareness For Emergencies
CSX Railroad offers a free, on-line training program which takes less than an hour to help local emergency responders manage incidents involcving rail property and equipment. CSX offers participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of how railroads operate, of possible hazards, ands of protocols to keep responders safe.
